Boeing has designed a new winglet to improve fuel burn for its 737 MAX narrowbody reengining program.

It is to yield an additional 1.5% improvement in fuel burn for the MAX, the company says.

“The concept is more efficient than any other wingtip device in the single-aisle market because the effective wing span increase is uniquely balanced between the upper and lower parts of the winglet,” chief project engineer, Michael Teal, says in a Boeing statement announcing the feature.

The design will square off against Airbus’s new winglets, which it calls Sharklets, which will be on the A320NEO and some late-model A320 classics.
